Catholicism is a term used to refer to the system of religious beliefs and traditions associated with the Catholic Church. It's principle mission is the salvation of souls through spreading the evangelium of Jesus Christ and administering the seven sacraments. It became the official religion of much of Europe during the later part of the Roman Empire and continued to be the predominent belief system until the 18th century (although many broke away in the 11th and 16th centuries), when liberalism took over Europe.
