Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great or Charles I (742–814), was a king of the Franks who conquered many new territories.

He succeeded in persuading the Pope to crown him Emperor in the West in 800 in Rome, claiming to be the successor of the emperors of the (Western) Roman Empire, starting what was some time later named the Holy Roman Empire.
