Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great or Charles I (742–814), was a king of the Franks who conquered many new territories.

He was proclaimed emperor in 800 in Rome, claimed to be the successor of the emperors of the (Western) Roman Empire, starting what was later named the Holy Roman Empire.
