A mother (mama, mom, mum, mommy, mummy) is the female parent of a human being; a woman in relation to a child or children to whom she has given birth; (also, in extended use) a woman who undertakes the responsibilities of a parent towards a child, esp. a stepmother. Mothers and fathers are the core of the nuclear family. Etymology: A hereditary word attested since the 12th century from Middle English moder, mother, which in turn derives from Old English mōdor; etymologically related to Old High German (from the Germanic language) muoter (Modern High German Mutter), Dutch moeder, Old Norse mothīr, Latin mater, and Ancient Greek μήτηρ (mētēr☆).
