WWI

Generalleutnant z. D. von Wernitz was reactivated for WWI. He commanded the "von Wernitz" division, which had existed since the beginning of the First World War (other sources state since 19 November 1914) and was renamed to 86th Infantry Division in March (other sources state August) 1915. It fought on the Eastern Front until the armistice there in January 1918 (then transferred to the Western Front until November 1918). Many sources state, Max Carl Erdmann Gronau became commander of the 86th Infantry Division on 21 March 1915, although he was still commanding the 22. Feldartillerie-Brigade. Other reliable sources still have Lieutenant General Theodor von Wernitz as commander of the division in 1916 and even early 1917.

Family

Theodor was the son of lord of the manor Theodor Wernitz (b. 11 May 1818 in Wahldorf; d. 12 December 1883 at Gut Thymau). His sister Anna Elise Wally Wernitz (b. 1854) married lord of the manor (Gut Deutschendorf near Schlodien) 2nd Lieutenant (ret.) Rudolf Emil von Kunheim (b. 14 September 1837 in Spanden) on 17 January 1874 with whom she had two daughters.[2]

On 29 May 1873 in Trier, 2nd Lieutenant Wernitz married his fiancée Friederike Louise Ida Schütte (b. 23 April 1854 in Trier). They had two children:[3]
