Kurt Gotthelf Kreuzwendedich von dem Borne (19 May 1857 – 22 November 1933) was a German officer of the Prussian Army and the Imperial German Army, finally General of the Infantry, army corps commander and knight of the order "Pour le Mérite" with Oak Leaves in WWI.
Life
Kurt attended a Gymnasium in Frankfurt until 1869, when he was transferred to the cadet corps. He first attended the cadet institute at Wahlstatt until 1874, he then attended Royal Prussian Main Cadet's Institute in Groß-Lichterfelde near Berlin where he achieved the rank of Portepee-Unteroffizier (PU).[1] After graduating from the cadet academy on 23 April 1874, von dem Borne was commissioned with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th Company/3rd Hessian Infantry Regiment No. 83 in Kassel.[2] He later also served in the 9th and then in the 5th Company.

- The division was subordinate to the Münster-based VII Army Corps, which in turn was part of the 2nd Army at the beginning of the First World War. Its troops captured Forts Fléron, Chaudfontaine, Hollogne, and Flémalle during the Siege of Liège. The large unit then fought in the Battle of the Sambre and advanced further across the French border.

- During the German Michael Offensive in March 1918, von dem Borne's group was positioned in the sector of the 17th Army. On 18 April 1918, he was promoted to General of the Infantry. In July 1918, his corps reinforced the front of the 7th Army in the area southwest of Reims and attacked near Chambrecy during the Second Battle of the Marne. Following the French counter-offensive from the Forêt de la Montagne, the corps was forced to withdraw to the Aisne River.

- In this capacity, from 10 January 1919, von dem Borne also served as Commander-in-Chief of the Army High Command Border Protection South (Grenzschutz Ost)
- 28 June 1919 Transferred to the Offiziere von der Armee, the officers' corps of the army (reserves), because of his outspokenness against the terms of the Treaty of Versailles
- 10 July 1919 Placed at disposal (z. D.) of the Preliminary Reichswehr (de facto retired) at his own request
Family
Kurt was the son of Prussian Major Albert Ferdinand Woteslaw von dem Borne (1804–1883) and his second wife (∞ Fürstenau 6 July 1844) Mathilde Friederike Malwine Emilie Viktoria, née von Waldow (1815–1867).[3] He had three siblings:

- Hermann Gotthelf Kreuzwendedich von dem Borne (1850–1923), Lieutenant General of the Prussian Army

Marriage
On 28 September 1882 in Kronjanten, West Prussia, 1st Lieutenant von dem Borne married his fiancée Marie Emilie Auguste Ernestine Henschel (1859–1901). They would have five children:[4]

- Dietrich Gotthelf Kreuzwendedich (1891–1916), 1st Lieutenant of the Prussian Army, aerial observer of the Fliegertruppe in WWI, killed on 29 July 1916 near Gent after his plane crashed[5][6]
On 24 January 1905 in Hagen (West Prussia), widower Lieutenant Colonel von dem Borne married his sister-in-law Auguste Wilhelmine Emilie Ida Henschel (b. 30 July 1862 in Grünsberg).
