Horst Erwin Walther Freiherr Treusch von Buttlar zu Brandenfels (11 August 1911 – 18 October 1974) was a German officer of the Reichswehr and the Wehrmacht, finally Lieutenant Colonel and General Staff Officer of the Luftwaffe in World War II.
Life
After attending Gymnasium (learning French and English) and achieving his Abitur, Freiherr Treusch von Buttlar-Brandenfels joined the Reichswehr on 1 April 1930 as an officer candidate. Officially assigned to a motorcycle rifle (Kradschützen) company of the 6. (Preußische) Kraftfahr-Abteilung (6th Prussian Motor Vehicle Department), he was commanded to the Deutsche Verkehrsfliegerschule (German Commercial Pilot School; DVS) at Schleißheim for "commercial" pilot training until 31 March 1932. He was then further trained as an officer, only interrupted by pilot exercises (he also obtained his blind or instrument flying qualification). On 1 October 1934, he was transferren from the army to the air force.

Family
Horst was the son of lord of the manor (Rittergut Markershausen) Colonel (retired 1931[1]) Karl Ludwig Walther Kurt Freiherr Treusch von Buttlar-Brandenfels (b. 8 November 1880 in Sondershausen), active member of the Old Hessian Knighthood, and his wife (∞ Hamburg 1 July 1910) Magda Emma Luise, divorced Freifrau von Ledebur, née von Braunschweig (b. 17 January 1883 in Hamburg).[2] He had at least one sibling. His younger brother Erwin Herrmann Ernst Freiherr Treusch von Buttlar-Brandenfels (b. 2 September 1915 in Braunschwieg) served as an infantry officer of the Wehrmacht.[3] Horst Freiherr Treusch von Buttlar-Brandenfels was, according to his military files, married, but as of the file entry from March 1944, not yet a father.
