Johannes Eberhard Mantey, since 1875 von Mantey (23 June 1835 – 12 June 1902), was a German officer of the Prussian Army, finally General of the Infantry and divisional commander.

Military career (chronology)

  • 1 October 1853 Joined the 2nd Pionier Battalion as a one-year volunteer (Einjährig-Freiwilliger)
  • 1854 to 1857 Attended the United Artillery and Engineering School
  • 1857 3rd Pionier Battalion
  • September 1859 6th Pionier Battalion
  • July 1860 Fortification service in Glogau
  • 1861 Adjutant with the 2. Pionier-Inspektion.
  • 1864 War with Denmark
    • Engineer officer with the staff of the General Command of the Combined Army Corps, as such he took part in the siege and storming of the Düppel Schanzen and the crossing to Alsen.
  • After the war, in the spring of 1865, Mantey was assigned to Colonel von Schweinitz, who was tasked with drafting a new sapper regulation, for several months. During this command, he oversaw the tent camp work on the Lockstedt Heath in Holstein in the summer of that year. Later assigned to the Governor of the Duchy of Schleswig, after leaving this command, he joined the General Staff of the V Army Corps.
  • 1866 In this position, he participated in the battles of Nachod, Skalitz, Schweinschädel, Gradlitz, and Königgrätz during the German War of Brothers.
  • 1867 Appointed commander of the 9th Company/III. (Fusiliers) Battalion in Hersfeld/2. Nassauisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 88
  • March 1870 Commanded to the Great General Staff (Großer Generalstab)
    • He was placed at the disposal of the General Staff of the V Army Corps during mobilization for the war against France. He participated in the Battles of Weissenburg and Wörth, the Battle of Stonne, the Battle of Sedan, the Battle of Petit-Bicetre, the encirclement of Paris, the sortie at La Malmaison, and the Battle of Mont Valérien.
  • 3 February 1877 Appointed department head in the Great General Staff
    • At the same time, he also served as a teacher at the War Academy and as a member of the study commission for the cadet corps.
    • When fortress warfare exercises were carried out near Strasbourg in 1878 under the leadership of General Adrian Friedrich Wilhelm Julius Ludwig von Verdy du Vernois, he was called in as an advisor.
  • 4 June 1881 to 11 March 1886 Commander of the 3. Westfälisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 16 in Coeln
  • 11 March 1886 to 19 August 1888 Commander of the 16th Infantry Brigade in Erfurt
  • 19 September to 15 October 1888 Delegated with the leadership of the 29th Division in Freiburg (Baden)

Family

Johannes Eberhard ws born the son of Prussian Major Johann Ludwig Mantey (1788–1866) and his second wife (∞ 17 July 1832) Leopoldine, née Wörmann (1800–1880).[1][2]

Marriage

On 15 October 1867 in Posen, Captain Mantey married his fiancée Ella Friederike Therese Cranz (1845–1926), a daughter of the Evangelical Lutheran clergyman, since 1840 military preacher of Posen and since 1855 General Superintendent of the Church Province of Posen Friedrich Alexander Leopold Cranz (1807–1878) and his wife Friederike, née von Schaper, daughter of Prussian Lieutenant General Heinrich Johann von Schaper (1782–1846). Eberhard and Ella would have five children:

  • Eberhard Friedrich Wilhelm (1869–1940), Vice Admiral of the Reichsmarine
  • Friedrich Otto Hugo (1872–1953), Generalmajor z. V. of the Wehrmacht

  • Werner Johannes Eberhard (1879–1970), 2nd Lieutenant of the Reserves, Dr. jur., Oberregierungsrat (Senior Government Councillor) with the Landesfinanzamt Berlin (Berlin State Tax Office) and mine director
