The 1619 Project
The 1619 Project is a revisionist program organized by The New York Times in 2019 with the goal of re-examining the legacy of slavery in the United States and stated to be timed for the 400th anniversary of the arrival in America of the first slaves from West Africa. This in order to challenge the notion that American history began in 1776 with the American Revolution, thus implicitly challenging previously politically correct views on the American history, such as the importance of the Enlightenment and American exceptionalism. The project is stated to be almost exclusively contributed to by Black academics, journalists and writers. It includes material for use in schools.
