Karl Maximilian "Max" Joseph Gustav Freiherr Schacky von Schönfeld (15 June 1842 – 26 August 1925) was a German officer of the Bavarian Army, finally honorary Lieutenant General.
Life
Maximilian Freiherr Schacky von Schönfeld joined the 3. Uhlanen-Regiment and fought against Prussia in the German War of Brothers 1866 on the side of the German Confederation. In 1867, as lord of the castle and estate, he founded the Bruckberg Warriors and Soldiers' Comradeship (Bruckberger Krieger- und Soldatenkameradschaft) and did a lot for the fire department.
With the 2. Chevaulegers-Regiment "Taxis" he took part in the Franco-German War. On 19 March 1872, he was transferred to the 2. Kürassier-Regiment "Prinz Adalbert von Bayern". In 1874, he was a riding teacher at the Equitations-Anstalt (riding school) and returned to the 2. Chevaulegers-Regiment "Taxis" in May 1875.
As of 22 June 1876, he served as squadron commander (Escadrons-Chef) with the 4. Chevaulegers-Regiment "König". On 7 September 1885, he was once again commanded to the Equitations-Anstalt (riding school). Subsequently, he served with the General Staff of the Bavarian Army.
On 8 March 1889, Freiherr Schacky von Schönfeld was delegated with the leadership of the 1. Chevaulegers-Regiment Kaiser Nikolaus von Rußland and was appointed commander on 30 October 1889. On 10 February 1890, he was appointed commander of the 1. Schweres Reiter-Regiment "Prinz Karl von Bayern".
From 18 August 1891 (until his promotion to colonel delegated with the leadership) to 16 December 1899, he was commander of the Royal Bavarian 1. Kavallerie-Brigade in Munich. He was, at the same time (1895), delegated with the leadership of the Inspection of Military Penitentiaries. Since 1894, he was also a Royal Bavarian Chamberlain (Königlich Bayerischer Kämmerer). On 17 December 1899, he was placed at disposal (z. D.) with the statutory pension. He was granted the Charakter als Generalleutnant on 18 June 1914 on occasion of the centenary of the 1. Schweres Reiter-Regiment "Prinz Karl von Bayern".
Family
Maximilian was the son of Rittmeister (ret.) Maximilian Freiherr Schacky von Schönfeld (1812–1856) and his wife (∞ 20 October 1841) Isabella, née Hartmann (1816–1891). After his father's early death, Max's mother married (∞ 9 September 1857) the cavalry officer and later Major General Adolf Franz Philipp Baumüller (d. 22 September 1877). It was Baumüller who convinced young Max to pursue a military career, also as a cavalry officer.
Marriages
On 12 September 1868, Freiherr Schacky von Schönfeld married his fiancée Therese Friederike Luise Eleonor Freiin von Lindenfels (1841–1892), the marriage remained childless.[1] On 5 May 1894 in Munich, the widower married Felicitas "Felicie" Marie Sophie Anna Ghislena Gräfin von Gatterburg (b. 11 September 1864 in Retz, Empire of Austria).[2] They had one daughter:
- Maria-Theresia Friederike Anna Isabella (b. 23 April 1895 in München);[3] ∞ k. u. k. 1st Lieutenant (ret.) Johann Nikolaus Freiherr von Schmysingk genannt Korff (d. 1970), wounded veteran of WWI
- Maria-Theresia took over the management of the estate in 1924, when her father had fallen ill, After his death, she and her husband inherited the estate. During the Second World War, over 40 people found accommodation and care on the castle estate, initially bomb victims and later also Vertriebene. Severe winters brought a particular shortage of heating material. Freiherr von Korff and his wife generously helped with firewood from the forests around the castle, and they gave many expellees a new start by giving them cheap land: This is how the train station settlement and the settlement on Industriestrasse came into being on the castle grounds. They made it easier to develop the building areas by handing over roads to the community and fellow citizens free of charge. In 1970, daughter Annemarie took over the estate. Before her death in 1993, Annemarie Freiin von Korff handed over Bruckberg Castle and estate to her niece Anna-Christina.
