In May 1893, after visiting the Royal Prussian War School as a Portepee-Fähnrich (officer cadet), he was commissioned as an officer. He was then initially deployed as a company officer in the 3rd company of his regiment. From the spring of 1895 at the latest, he was part of the 1st company of his regiment in the same position for several years. On 1 October 1897, he was appointed adjutant of the 2nd Battalion of 3. Lothringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 135 in Diedenhofen as the successor to 1st Lieutenant Bruns.

In 1899, he was replaced as battalion adjutant by 2nd Lieutenant Kophamel. He himself now served as a company officer in the 2nd company of his regiment. Around 1901, he was transferred to the 1st company of his regiment as a company officer. In 1902, he was transferred back to the 2nd Company of Infantry Regiment No. 135. On 18 August 1905, he was assigned to the Spandau rifle factory for service from 1 September 1905 to 30 September 1906. On 13 February 1906, he was assigned to the Spandau ammunition factory for an indefinite period of time with effect from 1 April 1906. He continued to be part of the 3rd Lorraine Infantry Regiment No. 135 in Diedenhofen.

On 19 February 1910, he was transferred to the Erfurt rifle factory as an administrative member. He stayed in Erfurt for a few years. On 18 August 1913, he was transferred to the Danzig rifle factory as a captain and administrative member. In 1917, he was once again at the Spandau rifle factory. He was taken over by the Reichswehr and served with the Reichswehr Ministry (RWM) in Berlin. In 1921, he was appointed commander of the training battalion of the 3rd (Prussian) Infantry Regiment in Marienburg. After 1 May 1925, he had to relinquish his command and was transferred again to the RWM. There he served as department head at the Army Weapons Office (WaA).

On 30 April 1928, he retired from the Reichswehr. He was given the character of Major General. His successor as department head in the Army Weapons Office was Lieutenant Colonel Fritz Arthur Kobus (1879–1945), who would become Lieutenant General of the Wehrmacht during WWII.
