Ernst Maria Dodo Emil Klemens von Behr (7 February 1873 – 2 November 1918) was a German officer of the Prussian Army and the Imperial German Army, finally Major and regimental leader in WWI.

Life

After attending the cadet corps (Kadettenkorps), Ernst von Behr joined on 22 March 1891 the Hannoversches Husaren-Regiment Nr. 15, which was renamed Husaren-Regiment „Königin Wilhelmina der Niederlande“ (Hannoversches) Nr. 15 on 31 August 1898. He was commissioned in May 1892 serving in the 4th Squdron. He later served in the 1st Squadron and was commanded to the Military Riding Institute (Militär-Reit-Institut) in Hannover. On 9 January 1900, he was commanded to serve with Friedrich Franz Michael IV, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, de facto under his guardian Regent Johann Albrecht, Duke of Mecklenburg (until 9 April 1901). On 29 March with effect from 15 April 1900, he was officially appointed Grand Ducal Flügeladjutant.

On 22 March 1903, von Behr was transferred back to the 1st Squadron/Husaren-Regiment „Königin Wilhelmina der Niederlande“ (Hannoversches) Nr. 15 in Wandsbek. After being promoted to Rittmeister in 1908, he was appointed commander of the 1st Squadron. On 23 May 1911, he received permission to marry. On 1 April 1914, he was appointed adjutant with the general command (Generalkommando) of the IX Army Corps. On 10 May 1917, transferred back to the Husaren-Regiment „Königin Wilhelmina der Niederlande“ (Hannoversches) Nr. 15 and appointed battalion commander of the Großherzoglich Mecklenburgisches Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 89 by the 17. Infanterie-Division.

Only a month later, on 12 June 1917, he was appointed adjutant with the High Command of the Army Group Rupprecht of Bavaria. On 3 August 1918, he was appointed commander of the Leib-Kürassier-Regiment „Großer Kurfürst“ (Schlesisches) Nr. 1 (Kavallerie-Schützen-Kommando 11/Garde-Kavallerie-Schützen-Division) for Lieutenant Colonel Franz Karl Ferdinand Maria Graf von Magnis who took over the Kavallerie-Schützen-Kommando 11. Major von Behr departed for the regiment on the Western Front on 7 August 1918.

Family

Ernst was the son of lord of the manor (estates Hindeberg [Hindenberg], Veelböken and Webelsfelde) Heino Johann Georg Otto Emil Franz von Behr (1833–1895),[1] Rittmeister (ret.) and Grand Ducal Chamberlain of Mecklenburg, and his second wife Theda Clementine Caroline Louise, née Freiin zu Innhausen und Knyphausen (1843–1927). Ernst had seven siblings.[2] He had four brothers, three would make major,[3] his youngest, Friedrich Arthur Enno Leonhard Wilhelm (b. 5 February 1879) served as a captain and company commander in the Kaiser Alexander Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 1 and was killed in action during the first days of WWI on 23 August 1914.

Marriage

On 1 July 1911 in Frankfurt am Main, Rittmeister von Behr married his fiancée Elisabeth "Elsa" Alexandrine von Chappuis (b. 16 July 1887 in Darmstadt; d. 28 June 1950 in München), daughter of Lieutenant General Hermann Heinrich von Chappuis (1838–1910) . Their daughter Waldtraut Leonie Theda was born on 19 February 1914 in Wandsbek.

Tiedemann-Behr

On 15 January 1921 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf, Widow Elsa von Behr married Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Wilhelm von Tiedemann (1875–1955).[4] He adopted Waldtraut on 19 June 1928, who then used the name Tiedemann-Behr. On 14 July 1933 in Potsdam, Waldtraut married Reichswehr officer Christoph Anton Wendt von L'Estocq (b. 25 December 1899 in Potsdam; d. 16 June 1991 in Starnberg). Christoph von L'Estocq started his military career during WWI with the Leibkompanie of the 1st Guards Regiment of Foot. From 1920 to 1934, he served with the 9. (Preußisches) Infanterie-Regiment in Potsdam. He would later become Colonel of the Wehrmacht and wrote several books post-WWII.
