Der Stern von Afrika (English: The Star of Africa) is a 1957 black-and-white German war film portraying the combat career of a World War II fighter ace of the Luftwaffe Captain Hans-Joachim Marseille.

History

The film stars Joachim Hansen and Marianne Koch and was directed by Alfred Weidenmann. The movie was premièred on 13 August 1957 in Berlin. Der Stern von Afrika proved to be successful at the box office. Newspapers reported that the audiences were "most pleasantly shaken", while younger viewers were enthused.

War drama based on a script by “Derrick” author Herbert Reinecker. In Africa, German fighter pilot Hans-Joachim Marseille (Joachim Hansen) made a name for himself during the Second World War with his courage and daring tactics. However, when he falls in love with the teacher Brigitte (Marianne Koch), he begins to question the meaning of the war.

Joachim Hansen (b. 28 June 1930 in Frankfurt an der Oder) also appeared in The Eagle Has Landed (de) as SS-Gruppenführer Jürgen Stroop, and the minisieries The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. He died on 13 September 2007 in Berlin at the age of 77.
