Washington Observer Newsletter
The Washington Observer Newsletter was a Washington DC and Torrance, California based newsletter published in conjunction with the magazine The American Mercury. Both publications were offered in a combined marketing promotion. The newsletter focused on news and gossip in Washington and was once described as the "house organ of the ultra-conservative Liberty Lobby".[1] American nationalist Willis Carto was the behind-the-scenes ideological force of the Washington Observer. At times, Carto would use the newsletter to attack and smear his rivals such as William F. Buckley, Richard Cotten, and Dr. William L. Pierce--some of whom were his allies in the past.
The bi-monthly publication was issued independently from August 15, 1965 through Sept. 15, 1976. Thereafter the newsletter focused on money and investments, becoming an inside supplement of The American Mercury.[2] Existing subscribers of the Washington Observer were offered a subscription to Carto's new nationalist newspaper The Spotlight which focused on similar topics.
"Lee Roberts" was said to be the publication's editors. However research done by the ADL revealed that "Lee Roberts" does not exist; most of the writing of the newsletter was by John Mitchell Henshaw.[3]
