Von Trotha joined the Garde-Chevaulegers-Regiment on 26 April 1821, the guard light and medium cavalry of Ludewig I, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhin, at his Darmstadt residence. He was commissioned on 22 April 1822. In 1823/24, he served as officer escort of Prince Ludwig of Hesse (the later Grand Duke Ludwig III), with whom he remained connected throughout his life, at the University of Leipzig. When Grand Duke Ludwig II took office in 1830, Trotha was appointed his wing adjutant and promoted to Rittmeister. On 25 May 1830, he was appointed Grand Ducal Hessian Chamberlain (Kammerherr).[1]

He rose further in ranks in the following years, was commanded to the Russian Empire in 1840/41 as a military escort to Prince Alexander of Hesse-Darmstadt and, as a colonel, was appointed adjutant general to the Grand Duke Ludwig II on 11 October 1847. In 1848, he was commissioned to deliver the news of Ludwig II's death to the court in Saint Petersburg. Trotha also served Grand Duke Ludwig III as adjutant general and was raised to the status of Freiherr by him on 26 January 1854.

While retaining his position as adjutant general, he was, according to the rules of the military convention, transferred to the Prussian Army on 1 January 1872. In 1873, he was commanded to Dresden on the occasion of the daeth of King Johann of Saxony. After the Grand Duke's death in June 1877, von Trotha went over to his successor Ludwig IV and was placed at disposal of the army and awarded the statutory pension on 12 October 1878.

Family

Hermann was a son of the Electoral Saxon Lieutenant Colonel Karl Max Adolf von Trotha (1770–1838) and his wife Amalie Friederike Elisabeth Marie, née Freiin von Lobkowitz (1765–1836). His father was owner of the estate Goldschau and co-owner of Obhausen-St. Petri. Hermann had four older siblings. His brother Gustav (1802–1879) was a Colonel of the Saxon Army and director of the military riding school.[2]

Marriage

On 4 November 1831 in Darmstadt, Rittmeister von Trotha married his fiancée Friederike Elisabeth Freiin von Adlersberg zu Adlershöh (1811–1885), the illegitimate daughter of Prince Ludwig Georg Karl of Hesse-Darmstadt (1749–1823), who was legitimized by Grand Duke Ludwig I in 1821. The marriage produced a son, the later Grand Ducal Hessian Chamberlain Ludwig Freiherr von Trotha (1832–1892).
