Category:Province of Posen
The Province of Posen (1848–1920), formerly the Grand Duchy of Posen (1815–1848), was an area in the east of the state and Kingdom of Prussia that existed from 1815 to 1920. Posen was the provincial capital. With the unification of Germany after the Franco-German War of 1870–71, the Prussian province became part of the German Empire, and the city of Posen was officially named an imperial residence city. Most of its territory was, after Polish political demands supported by violent riots and terror by Polish insurgents, involuntarily ceded to the Second Polish Republic under the Treaty of Versailles with Polish military taking over control in January 1920. The remaining territory within the post-WWI German Reich was re-organized into Posen-West Prussia in 1922 with Schneidemühl as its capital. This province was dissolved in 1938, when its territory was split between the neighboring Prussian provinces of Silesia, Pomerania and Brandenburg.
