The Decline of the West – Outlines of a Morphology of World History (German: Der Untergang des Abendlandes – Umrisse einer Morphologie der Weltgeschichte) is the most famous work by German historian and philosopher Dr. phil. Oswald Spengler. It is a classic milestone in the annals of historiography.

History
Published in two volumes, the first volume, subtitled "Form and Actuality" (Gestalt und Wirklichkeit), was published in the summer of 1918. The second volume, subtitled "Perspectives of World History" (Welthistorische Perspektiven), was published in 1922. An edition with both volumes was published in 1923.
It has been published in many editions and translated into multiple languages since its first publication in German. The work deals with a theory of cycles through which civilizations undergo and what the causes of decline and death are. As evidenced by its title, it predicts that what is known as Western civilization is declining and will soon die. The book has had international influence and even those who did not agree with many of its main ideas found it to contain valuable philosophical concepts.
A newest English edition was published by Arktos in 2021.
