Otto I (23 November 912 - 7 May 973), also known as Otto the Great, was Duke of Saxony (as Otto II, 936–961), German King (from 936), and Holy Roman Emperor (962–973). He consolidated the empire by his suppression of external and internal enemies. His use of the church has been seen as a stabilizing influence, which created a secure empire and stimulated a cultural renaissance.
