On 27 August 1939, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Tannenberg in 1914, certain officers who had especially distinguished themselves in WWI and who were the holders of high orders, to include the Pour le Mérite with Oak Leaves and the Austro-Hungarian (k. u. k.) Military Order of Maria Theresa, were awarded by Adolf Hitler a brevet or the Charakter of the next highest rank (primarily general or admiral rank known as Tannenberg-Generäle or Tannenberg-Admiräle, but also other staff officer ranks from major upwards) to the one they already held.
