Stephen Jay Gould (10 September 1941 - 20 May 2002) was a Jewish paleontologist. Paleontology is the study of the life of past geological periods as known from fossil remains.

However, he is more known as a popular science author, sometimes on areas on which he had no academic expert knowledge, such as race and intelligence, in particular the book The Mismeasure of Man, a popular bestseller among the general public, but with little influence on the academic debate.

He was a member of the (far) leftist Science for the People activist and propaganda organization.
