State
State, an ambiguous term, with political senses deriving from Latin phrases such as "status rei publicæ" ("condition (or existence) of the republic").[1] Political senses include government, country, and one of the semi-independent states of a confederacy or federation, such as a U.S. state. It is also part of various combination terms, such as nation-state.
