State

State, an ambiguous term, with political senses deriving from Latin phrases such as "status rei publicæ" ("condition (or existence) of the republic"). Political senses include government, country, and one of the semi-independent states of a confederacy or federation, such as a U.S. state. It is also part of various combination terms, such as nation-state.
