Republican, generally means someone who supports a republican model of government as opposed to, say, a monarchy or a totalitarian government. The rare exception being Poland where the country was, until 1795, officially a constitutional republic but with an elected monarch.

History

Some countries have political parties with this name, an example being the Republican Party (United States). Republican and terms such as Republicanism have sometimes refers to sometimes violent opposition to an existing monarch and monarchism, although the actual goals may be broader than only removing the monarch, such as the independence of a region or a more general political revolution. One example is the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War which was largely socialist and communist driven, the monarch having already abdicated.
