The red pill is a term derived from the 1999 film The Matrix. In the film, the main character is offered the choice between a red pill and a blue pill. The red pill would allow him to escape from "the Matrix" (a simulated reality world) and into the real world, therefore living the "truth of reality" even though it is a harsher, more difficult life; the blue pill would lead him to staying in the Matrix, living in a pretend comfortable world.

The term is used by the alt-right movement, in reference to rejecting the politically correct view on topics such as race differences, sex differences, mass immigration, and Jewish influence.

Black pill and white pill are related terms, referring to changed views causing great pessimism or optimism, which may or may not be excessive and dysfunctional.
