Quakers is an often used name for members of the Society Of Friends, a radical Christian group that arose in mid-17th-century England. They were initially viewed as subversive and persecuted both in England and American colonies.

Quakers have a "testimony of equality" and consequently have been involved in various movements towards greater "equality". They were a religious influence on the Enlightenment.

Part of the earlier large influence of Quakers may be related to an earlier large banking and financial influence of Quakers, for reasons such as Quakers earlier being excluded from professions such as the law and the military as well as having a reputation for honesty.[1]
