The Mughal Empire, also spelled Moghul and Mogul (meaning "Mongol"), was an empire in northern India ruled by the Muslim and Turkic-Mongolic Mughal dynasty, from the early 16th to the mid-18th century, continuing but increasingly powerless until the mid-19th century.
