Jan Stričko
Jan Stričko (22 October 1981 – 25 October 2008) was a Czech nationalist murdered by a Gypsy in October 2008.
The incident
On Friday, 24 October 2008, Stričko was celebrating his birthday in a disco club in the town of Rakovník. During one song, he accidentally bumped into a Gypsy. The Gypsy allegedly got annoyed and wanted to resolve this situation in a fight, but the situation eventually calmed down.
Only after the end of the disco, Stričko approached the Gypsy (who was then leaving the club with several companions), trying to erase the conflict by talking it out. However, as Stričko approached the group, the Gypsy suddenly produced a knife, turned around and stabbed him in the heart and lungs.
Stričko died during transportation to the hospital in the morning hours of 25 October.
Some media initially referred to the incident as "probably a skirmish between friends". However, Stričko did not have a friendship with the murderer. Speculations have appeared that this misinformation was possibly spread in order to diminish the racial context of the murder. Czech nationalists openly labeled the murder as "racially motivated".[1]
Commemoration
For several days after Stričko's murder, SMS messages mourning Stričko's death were circulated among Czech and Slovak nationalists. On Sunday (26 October) following Stričko's death, a march commemorating him took place in Rakovník. About 300 people attended the march, which commenced peacefully.
Legal consequences
On 14 April 2009, 22-year old Gypsy Michal Navrátil was sentenced to a 12 year prison term for Stričko's murder by the county court in Prague. Navrátil did not appeal against the verdict. Navrátil told the court he was acting in defence. He also testified he smoked 10 joints of marijuana that evening. The police ruled out the possibility that the attack was racially motivated.[2]
