Image title	Marshal Philippe Pétain (1856-1951), the former French chief-of-state during Nazi occupation of France, seats at his trial (23 July-14 August) in July 1945 in Paris. Behind him, his attorney Jacques Isorni addresses the court. During WWI Petain became a national hero for his defence of Verdun (1916). When France collapsed in 1940, he negotiated the armistice with Germany and Italy, and became chief-of-state, establishing his government in Vichy. His aim to unite France under the slogan "Work, Family and Country", and to keep France out of the war, involved active collaboration with Germany.
