Coon is a racial slur against Black people having an uncertain origin. One possible origin for "coon" comes from the Portuguese word for slave pens or barracks "baracoons".[1]

Coon music or coon songs were performed in minstrel shows made-up of Black and White singers in Black face makeup. [1] The shows were popular from the 1880s to 1940s in America.
