Catalan language
Catalan (Català) is a Romance language spoken in Andorra and on coastal northeastern Spain, mostly in the regions of Catalonia, Valencia (where it is known as Valencià), and on the Balearic islands. It is spoken by about 9 million speakers, most of whom live in Catalonia and half of whom learned it as a second language.
Catalan developed from Latin in parallel with Castilian Spanish, and resembles more the Occitan languages of southern France, in particular Languedocien. It is mostly mutually intelligible with the Occitan languages and with Spanish.
