Anglish or Anglisc is a form of English which is devoid of borrowed loanwords. The term Anglish was coined by Paul Jennings in 1966.

History

The Norman invasion of England in 1066 caused the legal replacement of the Anglo-Saxon folk language with Norman French as the official state and elite language. The Norman language was legally superior for centuries, and resulted in the widespread adoption of Norman words in the spoken language of the common folk.

The desire to restore a pristine form of Anglo-Saxon free from loanwords goes back to this Norman invasion. Various proponents (poets, linguists, writers, politicians) have supported different degrees of change of the English language, with some preferring to use simple and short Germanic words over longer and complicated Latin and Greek ones, and others advocating for the outright replacement of all non-Germanic words with Germanic ones.

Usage today

Several blogs on Neocities and Spacehey and content creators use Anglish.

Spiritually, Anglish is seen by some as a way to get more in touch with ones' own ancestors and roots.
