Alchemy narrowly refers to (medieval) attempts to transform base metals, such as lead or copper, into silver or gold and the creation of various substances with abilities such as curing disease and giving immortality. There are also the underlying views contributing to this, including esotericism, occultism, Hermeticism, Rosicrucianism, protoscience, and chemistry (a term deriving from alchemy).
