The Wars of the Roses (1455–85) were a series of dynastic English civil wars, fought between the Houses of Lancaster and York for the English throne. The wars were named many years afterward from the badges or emblems of the contending parties: the white rose of York and the red of Lancaster. The final victor was Henry Tudor, later Henry VII of England, who by his marriage united the Yorkist and Lancastrian claims.
