Thomas Alva Edison (11 February 1847 – 18 October 1931) was an American inventor and businessman who developed and held patents for many pioneering devices and had an important role in creating the modern age of electricity.

Edison was also one of the first inventors to apply the principles of organized science and teamwork to the process of invention, working with many researchers and employees. He is often credited with establishing the first industrial research laboratory.
