The Churl (William's House, Volume II) is a novel by American author Tito Perdue, published by Arktos in 2015. This is the second book in the William's House series.

Publisher description

"The second volume of William’s House focuses on Young Albert, the youngest addition to the Pefley family, and his formative childhood years. Albert’s growing relationship with his family and the development of his perception of the world are set against the backdrop of William’s continuing efforts to relentlessly pursue an increase in the Pefley family’s fortune and reputation in Alabama at the beginning of the twentieth century. Albert’s childhood unfolds in the heat and poverty of the recently defeated Confederacy, where war wounds still linger, and he must measure up to his father’s exacting expectations of character and industry, or risk failing the family name William has worked so hard to establish.

Spanning two generations, the William’s House tetralogy chronicles the rise of the Pefleys in Alabama across the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The struggles of father William Pefley and his wife Deborah against poverty, disease, and their own expectations are charted through the birth of their four sons and their varying destinies. Each one of these sons find themselves in positions beyond their father’s expectation or influence, however it is in Young Albert that the story finds its grandest expression, and in which an emerging industrial America is symbolized through his entrepreneurial adventures and exotic travels. As control of their fate passes from father to son, the brothers find themselves in a world which is in transition, in which the Georgia that gave them their first memories is changing beyond recognition and can no longer hold them. But the call of family and memory always calls them home, back to William’s house, where they first saw daylight."[1]
