This template is used to produce a phonetic or phonemic representation (using the IPA system) of Polish words or sounds, using natural spelling to avoid the need to search for the correct phonetic symbols. The result is wikilinked to Wikipedia:IPA for Polish. Optionally, an audio file can also be specified.

Usage

The number of parameters is always limited to 33.

Normal usage:

The full range of special values for the first parameter (changing the delimiters and/or specifying that the next parameter is an audio file) is as follows:

The following parameters represent their normal sounds in Polish:

  • a ą b c ć cz d dz dź e ę f g h (or ch) i j k l ł m n ń o p r s ś sz t u (or ó) w y z ź ż (or rz)

The following parameters have special meanings:

  • - (hyphen) for a space between words
  • ' (apostrophe) for a primary stress mark (placed before the stressed syllable)
  • , (comma) for a secondary stress mark
  • J for a superscript j (used after k and g)
  • I for non-syllabic i (normally spelt j in words like gaj)
  • U for non-syllabic u (normally spelt ł in words like miał)
  • N for a sound like English ng (in words like bank)
  • e1 for a more closed e sound (as when adjacent to soft consonants, in words like Maciej)

Other values used as parameters will be displayed unconverted. (The conversion system is coded in Template:c-pl.)
