===WWII===
As of April 1944, he had been wounded 12 times (among other things losing a finger of his left had), during April 1945, in the battle for East Prussia, he was wounded a 13th time. Wounded and seriously ill, he was evacuated from Königsberg to Schleswig on one of the last ships. In June 1945, [[POW]] Dennhardt was released from captivity directly from a military hospital in Schleswig.
===Post-WWII===
He rejoined the military service in the West German [[Bundeswehr]] on 16 December 1955. He first served in Kiel, then as of 1 January 1959 for six months with the Headquarters and Signals Company "COMLAND SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN" in Rendsburg (Eider Barracks). From 1 July 1959 to 31 July 1963, he served with the "Allied Land Forces Denmark" (LANDENMARK) in [[Copenhagen]]. The LANDENMARK, in turn, belonged to the "Allied Forces Northern Europe" (AFNORTH) land forces. From 1 August 1963 to 31 October 1965, he served as German military attaché in Ankara, [[Turkey]]. He then commanded the Panzergrenadierbrigade 16 until 31 March 1968. The 16th Panzergrenadier Brigade "Herzogtum Lauenburg" was a brigade of the 6th Panzergrenadier Division, headquartered in Wentorf near Hamburg and Elmenhorst (Lauenburg). The brigade was primarily stationed in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg and was disbanded on 5 May 1994. From 1 April 1960 to 30 June 1971, when he retired, he was a staff officer with and deputy commander of the 6th Panzergrenadier Division in Neumünster.

==Family==
On 4 February 1943, Captain Dennhardt was granted permission to marry his fiancée Christel Neubauer (b. 3 May 1922), daughter of Chief Inspector Max Neubauer and his wife Luise, née Hartwich. The couple married in the spring of 1943. Their only son, Arnim Horst, was born on 21 March 1944.
