New Brunswick (French: Nouveau-Brunswick; German: Neu Braunschweig) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is one of the three Maritime provinces and one of the four Atlantic provinces. It is the only province with both English and French as its official languages.

History

The province's name (since 1784) comes from the archaic English translation for Brunswick (Braunschweig) in the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (until 1806); a city in northern Germany, and the ancestral home of the Hanoverian King George III of the United Kingdom.

The provincial capital is Fredericton. The New Brunswick Department of Finance estimates that the provincial population in 2006 was 749,168, of which a majority is English-speaking; but with a large francophone minority (35%), chiefly of Acadian origin.
