The term non-governmental organization (NGO) etymologically could refer to a very wide variety of organizations, but in practice it is used much more narrowly, with varying and unclear definitions.

The label is often applied to non-profit "grassrots" "volunteer" organizations with politically correct ideological motivations, but may sometimes be applied also to other (politically correct) organizations, but the label is rarely applied to politically incorrect organizations.

Despite the name, NGOs are often dependent on governments to varying extents, such as regarding funding and in order to implement the lobbied for politically correct ideologies.

Controversially, despite often framing themselves as "non-profit", "grassrots", and "volunteer", many prominent NGOs have been criticized for very high salaries for the top management.
