WikiLeaks is an international non-profit organization that publishes news leaks and classified media provided by anonymous sources.

Despite the name and use of MediaWiki software, the organization's website is now not a wiki, although originally the intention was to look similar to Wikipedia.

A well-known leak in 2010, notably involving United States warfare in the Middle East, was by Chelsea Elizabeth Manning/Bradley Edward Manning, a former United States Army soldier who was convicted by court-martial in July 2013 of violations of the Espionage Act and other offenses, later commuted in 2017 by Barack Obama.

Another controversy is regarding stated use of Wikileaks by Russian intelligence during the 2016 election that elected Donald Trump The founder Julian Assange has consistently rejected any connection to or co-operation with Russia in relation to the leaks.

In 2010, Sweden issued an international arrest warrant for Assange, after questioning him months earlier about allegations of sexual assault. He was eventually granted asylum by Ecuador due to fears of political persecution and extradition to the United States, but remained in the Embassy of Ecuador in London for almost seven years. After disputes with the Ecuadorian authorities in 2018, the police were invited into the embassy, and he was sentenced to 50 weeks in prison in the United Kingdom for breaching the Bail Act. Swedish prosecutors closed their case, but the United States charged Assange with various crimes.
