Pope John Paul I (17 October 1912 - 28 September 1978), original name Albino Luciani, was pope in 1978.
The status as pope is disputed by some traditional Catholics such as sedevacantists.
There are various conspiracy theories regarding his death. Many of these concern the serious corruption in the Vatican Bank, possibly linked to Freemasonry, which is forbidden by church law.
