Jacques Cartier (1 December 1491 – 1 September 1557) was French mariner, whose explorations of the Canadian coast and the St. Lawrence River (1534, 1535, 1541–42) laid the basis for later French claims to North America. He is credited with naming Canada, although he used the name only to refer to the area around what is now Quebec City.
