The Highlander Folk School once located in Monteagle, Tennessee was one of several communist-run indoctrination centers in the United States. It was founded by Don West, District Director of the Communist Party in North Carolina, and Miles Norton, Director of the Commonwealth College. Organizing union activity using the CIO was a prime task of the school.[1]

The school was closed by a Tennessee court order for subversive activities in 1960.
