German chocolate cake is a rich layered chocolate cake topped and filled with coconut or coconut pecan frosting.

History

German chocolate originates in Dallas, Texas. In 1852, the American (or English), Samuel German developed a dark baking chocolate for the company Baker’s Chocolate. This baking chocolate was produced and sold under the name “Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate“.[1]

Mrs. George Clay, a homemaker from Dallas, Texas had her recipe for “German’s Chocolate Cake” published, as “Recipe of the Day”, by The Dallas Morning News in 1957. This recipe used “German’s Sweet Chocolate,” the baking chocolate "Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate".
