The Heeresfliegerabzeichen or Army Aviation Badge was established in April 1934 for the new and small Austrian Air Force. In contrast to the German Luftwaffe, the Austrian Air Force was not an independent branch of the military but was subordinate to the army. The badge is very similar to the field pilot badge (Feldpilotenabzeichen) of the Austro-Hungarian Imperial and Royal Aviation Troops (kaiserliche und königliche Luftfahrtruppen) except for the crown.
