Civilizing mission

"Civilizing mission" (French: mission civilisatrice) was a stated justification for and goal of European colonialism, spreading Western civilization and associated benefits to non-Western areas.

A somewhat similar, more recent phenomenon is the stated goal of spreading liberal democracy, used as a justification for regime changes, including by military force, invasion, and war.
