James Buchanan Jr. (23 April1791 – 1 June 1868) was the 15th president of the United States from 1857 to 1861.
(Leftist) historians tend to rank the presidents during the period before the American Civil War very low, and many rank Buchanan as the worst president in American history. He was succeeded by the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.
