Autarky

Autarky is an economic system of self-sufficiency. It is not necessarily a completely closed economy, which means not engaging in trade with any other country.

A major motivation is that a country may be blockaded by an enemy or enemies, possibly causing a country to be forced to submit by the trade blockade alone, if it is not self-sufficient.
