Austin leaves behind father Jeff Metcalf, mother Meghan Metcalf, and twin brother Hunter Metcalf.
Life
Metcalf was a junior at Frisco's Memorial High School where he was a 4.0 GPA honor student. Austin participated in both the boys shot put and discus. On the day of his murder, he completed the shot put and discus with a with distances of 39 feet, 9¾ inches and 86 feet, 4 inches, respectively. He was set to begin the 2025 high school football season. Austin was a standout athlete and MVP of the football team He had aspirations of playing college football.[3]
Death
On 2 April 2025 at Kuykendall Stadium and during the District 11-5A championship meet, Jeff Metcalf told reporters that the incident "began after Metcalf told Anthony he was sitting in the wrong area," sparking an angry Karmelo Anthony, a 17-year-old student from Centennial High School, to fatally stab Austin in the heart. Austin's twin brother, Hunter, was present and tried to save him but was unable to stop the bleeding. Austin died in his brother's arms despite emergency medical efforts.[4]
- Hunter Metcalf said he always looked up to his twin brother Austin, who was born just four minutes before him. “As a linebacker, he was a stud, and I always tried to fill those shoes and play with him,” Hunter Metcalf told CNN affiliate WFAA. “I had a blast my whole life playing sports with him.” That bond remained unshakable until the moment Austin Metcalf took his last breath after being stabbed by another student during a high school track meet Wednesday in Frisco, Texas, about 30 miles north of Dallas. Metcalf told WFAA he tried to save his brother’s life by stopping him from bleeding out. He said he held him until first responders arrived on scene and attempted resuscitation. “I tried to whip around as fast as I could,” Metcalf said. “I looked at my brother and I’m not going to talk about the rest. I tried to help him.” First responders administered lifesaving measures, including CPR and giving blood, but were unable to save Austin Metcalf, who died at the scene, Frisco police said in a news release. In that moment, Metcalf had lost his twin brother and role model. And the Frisco school community had lost a standout athlete with a promising future.[5]
Karmelo Anthony
17-year-old Karmelo Anthony is a violent thug who, according to CBS News Texas, had previously been suspended for bringing a knife to school. On the day of the murder, he was, like so often, skipping school. Hunter Metcalf said the stabbing occurred after his brother asked the suspect to leave their school's tent at the meet. Anthony then grabbed his bag and reached inside, telling Metcalf to "touch me and see what happens," according to the police document.
Anthony had no business being in the tent of an opposing school and behaved extremely provocatively. Hunter Metcalf told police, his brother and he had never met the suspect before. Anthony came over to them. When Anthony was caught by police, an officer said: "I have the alleged suspect," which prompted Anthony to say, "I'm not alleged, I did it."[6] His bond was set at $1 million, court records show. Anthony was held at the Collin County Jail.
