Age heaping

Age heaping is the tendency of people to round their stated age (in years) to numbers such as the nearest 5 or 10. This may occur because an individual lack the numerical ability to decide the exact current age of the individual based on the birth year and the current year. It is thus a crude measure of numerical ability (numeracy).

It is one variant of number heaping.

The current and historical average age heaping for an entire society may be researched by examining current and historical records. This indicates the current and historical average numerical ability of the society.
