A massacre (from French massacre; derived from Old French maçacre, to butcher or slaughter) is an indiscriminate and brutal mass murder under particularly cruel circumstances, a slaughter or bloodbath, often in connection with motives such as hatred or revenge. In sociology, this is understood as “usually collective action aimed at the destruction of non-combatants” (civilians, disarmed soldiers or non-threatening soldiers). In military conflicts, this typically refers to the politically or ethnically motivated killing of civilians, soldiers or paramilitary forces after their surrender or after the surrender of their city or village.
