Karl Ziegler (originally written Carl) was a German officer of the Bavarian Army and veteran of three military conflicts, finally Oberst z. D. (Colonel at disposal).
Military career (chronology)
Ziegler began his military career with the 3. Jäger-Bataillon in Aschaffenburg, where he was commisioned on 1845. He later transferred to the 5. Jäger-Bataillon in Würzburg and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1849 and to Captain 2nd Class in 1859, although the 5. Jäger-Bataillon by this time had found a new home in Straubing.[1]
On 9 July 1866, Captain 1st Class Ziegler was appointed Stabshauptmann (Staff Captain) of the 5. Jäger-Bataillon in Straubing[2] under Oberstleutnant Heinrich Deßloch and as of 1867 Oberstleutnant Rudolf Freiherr von Gumppenberg. Stabshauptmann seems to have been a job title (Dienstbezeichnung) until c. 1872, not a rank. Presumably the senior Hauptmann I. Klasse, not leadig a company, but appointed to a battalion staff as deputy of the commander.
On 3 October 1869, Captain 1st Class Ziegler was appointed Stabshauptmann of the 2. Jäger-Bataillon[3] in Burghausen. At the beginning of the German-Franco War, he was commanded to the Königlich Bayerisches 7. Infanterie-Regiment "Hohenhausen" (5. Infanterie-Brigade/3. Division/II. Armee-Korps). From 21 December 1870 to 13 October 1873, Major Ziegler was commander of the 7. Jäger-Bataillon in Landsberg (and with the occupation army in France). At the end of 1873, he left active service.
On 9 February 1877, Honorary Oberstlieutenant a. D. (retired) was transferred to the Landwehr (home guard) as Honorary Oberstlieutenant z. D. (at disposal), where he would become commander of the Landwehr district command in Speyer.[4] On 16 December 1886, Honorary Oberst z. D. Ziegler retired with the statutory pension and the right to wear the uniform.[5][6]
